Kay Crawford and Bonnie Barbey first saw each other at a Christian conference in 2000. Kay was leading prophetic worship and Bonnie was there as one of the new kids on the block. Bonnie was blown away by the anointing God was releasing through the worship, but even more taken by the deep connection she felt with this woman, Kay, that she had never laid eyes on before this moment. It was, in the words of ‘Anne of Green Gables', like seeing a kindred spirit, a best friend she had never met. It took another year for the two of them to even get a chance to talk beyond the "Wow, I love your worship" level. They were connected in a ministry session a conference or two later, and that was the beginning of a deep friendship for two wild and crazy old bats. It was a couple more years before the music between the two of them began. Being old and memory impaired, they take no responsibility for the accuracy of the story. It sounds right though. It may have gone something like this…
Bonnie: Kay Crawford and I began our songwriting collaboration in 2004.
Kay: Has it really been that long?!?
Bonnie: Yes. Remember we were at a church in Phoenix and the pastor gave us a prophetic word that we were going to write songs together. I was thrilled, because I was already convinced this was going to happen, and desperately needed tunes for my lyrics. You however, had a look of utter horror on your face, not to mention skepticism?
Kay: But the reason for that was I’d had tons of people tell me that God had told them that I was supposed to write music with them, but He hadn’t said anything to me, and I couldn’t come up with anything, so here was this guy telling me that I was supposed to collaborate with you and I was thinking, ‘Oh, great! There goes a wonderful friendship right down the toilet!???
Bonnie: Right. Anyway, remember that later on that trip, God gave me a prophetic song for the church we were ministering in, and you made a full song out of it; and then when we were in Osaka, Japan where you were leading a prophetic worship seminar, God gave me the words to ‘You Know My Name’?
Kay: And as soon as I looked at it, I knew exactly how the music was supposed to go. I was able to just start singing the song. Needless to say, I was in shock.
Bonnie: So, anyway, that was the beginning of our music collaboration. We’ve written many songs since then.
Kay: And you are working on some cheery stuff, aren’t you? Even Eeyore smiles once in a while.
Bonnie: I’m trying, I’m trying, o.k.?!? But still, I think we’ve done pretty well for a couple of old bats!
Kay: I think so, too. You wanna go shopping?
